Obama’s War

Fastball or Hanging CurveObama is like a relief pitcher in the bottom of the ninth, with a one run lead and the home team at bat. He can save the game or lose it but he can’t win it. To quote one predecessor, ol’ Number 37, “Let me make one thing perfectly clear”. Unless he makes a mistake and blows the lead, Iraq has been won and he can’t pin anything but credit on President George W. Bush.

Afghanistan is a different story. ‘Bama is being suckered into his own Vietnam as he readies to commit another 17,000 ground troops to a pointless, unwinnable war. No outside power has ever been victorious there in more than 5,000 years of history, including the former Soviet Union during its prime.

The barren, mountainous terrain ranks among the most forbidding in the world and only those who know its intricacies can prevail. There is no strategic military value in Afghanistan, only the political pursuit of a 9/11 vendetta against Osama Bin Laden, whose single greatest role now lies in being an effective decoy. We’ve been successful at hitting high value terrorist targets near the Pakistan-Afghan border from the air but as the Taliban withdraw deeper toward the interior of the country, following them with additional ground troops becomes increasingly suicidal.

Our bravest of the brave will be needed elsewhere in the coming months as we address more threatening situations in The War On Terror. If “H” believes he can simply talk his way around the growing Iranian threat, he is dangerously mistaken. If our own Congress can ‘roll’ him so easily, as they did with the giant Porculus bill, he’ll be putty in the hands of Middle-Eastern thugs who already see him as a weak leader. Mohammed is their ‘Messiah’, not Obama!

Existing military personnel are already spread thinly across the globe and I, for one, am not ready to see the draft reinstated. With 35 active terrorist training camps operating right here in America, perhaps we should be addressing internal security first — before we go rock climbing in an impossible place halfway around the world. I like being safe at home.

Number 44 has taken the mound and he is nervously looking for the right grip on the horsehide. Does he have a fastball that can nibble at the corners or will he dangle a hanging curve over the center of the plate? We have yet to discover whether or not he has any real stuff. Geez — I hope it’s hidden in there somewhere!
