We needed milk, eggs, a frozen vegetable and something for lunch. Just as the supermarket doors parted in front of me, a tall bearded man with a dimly lit smile bowed slightly and held out a piece of paper. I thought, “Geez they’re out early. I wonder what goofy cause this guy is pushing…ban exhaling C02, petition to save spotted tree toads…”
What I ate for lunch that day was a hearty helping of humble pie, as I read what the man had given me; now I share it with you:
With all the clatter of petty political one-upmanship and unholy clergy spewing venom from the pulpit, it’s easy to forget these freedoms can be exercised only because there are, as there have always been, quieter people of valor and integrity fighting to make it possible. I thought we should remember.
