House Of Popeye

Chalk up another one for the Democrats! They’ve voted to fund spinach instead of American troops! By the narrow margin of 218 to 212, the appropriately named ‘House’ passed a bill funding spinach, peanut storage, milk subsidies and other such pork-barrel projects without so much as a farthing’s worth of consideration for the critical needs of our front line forces. In order to buy the votes she needed, knowing full-well it would never become law, ‘House Madam’ Pelosi literally gave away the store to every congressman she could unearth, who is in the pocket of a special interest group, and still barely got the bill passed. Friday’s Washington Post editorial sums it up pretty well, which tells me that even the mainstream media are finally starting to see how far the Democrats’ desperation has driven them. Most of the other articles which appeared in the lynch-mob media completely ignored the frivolous pork expenditures, hardships to our military and defeatist signals sent to the enemy. Rather, they treated the measure as if it were a genuine attempt to right the ‘terrible wrongs’ which they, themselves, have fabricated.

As I’ve stated previously, the Liberal Left is heavily invested in defeat. They not only own defeat but don’t have the courage of conviction to simply cut funding for Iraq, instead of playing these harmful political games. They know the American people would never stand for it and they’d probably be deprived of meaningful power as a party for the next several decades. The Democrats keep reaching for similarities between Iraq and Vietnam. They seem to view our defeat in ‘Nam as some sort of triumph even though, except for the disastrous Carter period, it led to nearly twenty years of straight Republican rule. Nonetheless, it seems they’ll say or do anything to repeat that dubious ‘achievement’ and if legislation like this ever got through they could succeed. The only similarities between the two I can find are:

  1. Millions of innocent people were slaughtered as a result of our pullout before finishing the job and would be again, possibly in greater numbers.
  2. Political interference and misdirected public sentiment prolonged the war, costing unnecessary American lives as it is doing today.
  3. We have many of the same useless retreads trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and running down their own country in the process, just like before.

Worse than stabbing our troops in the back, worse than using our tax dollars as bribe money, by trying to impose an arbitrary withdrawal date from Iraq they have sent an emboldening message of surrender to our enemies. They have told the likes of Amadinajad, the Taliban and al-Qaeda to simply, “Hold-on and pull for the Democrats. We’ll hand you victory”. They’re even saying, “Here’s when!” These kinds of political theatrics do nothing but send a dangerous signal of weakness to allies and enemies, alike.

The unwarranted seizing of British sailors and Iran’s thumbing of its nose at U.N. sanctions are only the beginning. Arrogance like this results from just this sort of performance and the anti-American rhetoric that has become the Democrat hallmark. In case no one noticed, the Iranian action is a brazen act of war. If all the British seamen are not returned in a timely fashion, unharmed, I hope this act will be recognized as England’s and [as their ally] America’s opportunity to ‘redeploy’ a few of our idle B2s, end the Iranian nuclear threat and send their upstart Hitler wannabe’ on a permanent vacation. We can do it now or we can do it later, when it will much more difficult and costly.

As for the disingenuous actions of the Socialist Democrats, they will no doubt have more underhanded, undermining tricks up their sleeves this week. Unless there’s a secret plan to enlist Popeye, what they really need to do is send President Bush a ‘clean’ funding bill for our troops and address more controversial issues like spinach and arbitrary deadlines in a separate measure. I wonder if they still care enough about America to do this or about the Americans who put their lives on the line everyday, so even people like Libs can enjoy the hard-won blessing of freedom.
